For the unflinching , ""City of Life and Death" .
One of the most powerful movies I have ever seen . Not for the emotionally squeamish , "City of Life and Death" deals with the battle for and the occupation of Nanking ; one of the great atrocities, and tragedies in human history . Director Lu Churn manages to, while showing the utterly debased, cruelty of the Japanese army, also shows them as individual , varied humans .
Filmed in black and white, if s a beautiful ( but not self conscious arty )thing to see, if one can call the subject matter "beautiful". Filled with incredible historical detail, and care ( "where did they get those Japanese tankd?")is also has maybe the best combat scenes I have seen ( forget "Private Ryan").
